Carencro, Louisiana, lies near the confluence of interstate highways 49 and 10, in the heart of Cajun country. This Lafayette metropolitan area community is also part of Lafayette Parish, about 60 miles west of Baton Rouge and about 135 miles northwest of New Orleans.

Carencro's total population in 2012 was 7,526, and Carencro has enjoyed a population jump of more than 20 percent since 2000. During that same period of time, Carencro real estate saw a median home price of $136,200, with an appreciation value from 2011 to 2012 of nearly 3 percent. Carencro's cost of living is more than 13 percent lower than the U.S. average.

Shopping and Dining

Carencro's residents and visitors will no doubt love the quaint and charming local retailers and cafes in town, such as the Pink Umbrella Boutique, Paul's Pirogue of Carencro, Kitty's Savings, Nolan's Cafe and Fred's Store. Some of the popular local shopping options in Lafayette include the Discordia Culture Shop, Reflections of Olde Antique Mall, Parish Ink and the Gypsy Market. There are numerous one-stop shopping and dining opportunities available in Lafayette beyond the city's downtown area, such as the Northgate Mall, the Mall of Acadiana and The Villages of River Ranch.

In fact, there are more than 25 restaurants and more than 20 retail and specialty shops in the Lafayette's vibrant Downtown alone. Cajun and Creole cuisines figure prominently on menus throughout Lafayette Parish, and some of the local favorites include seafood gumbo, crawfish étouffé, and jambalaya. Check out the Blue Dog Café, Jolie’s Bistro, French Press, and The Shed BBQ for some of their authentic, sweet-and-spicy Cajun and Creole fare.

Parks and Recreation

The Parks and Recreation Commission of Carencro provides a wide range of recreational opportunities for all of the city's health-conscious residents. Its programs run the gamut - from adult softball teams, to summer camps for kids, and fitness programs for seniors.

Pelican Park, a state-of-the-art baseball and softball complex calling Carencro home, welcomes ball players from around the country each year, in part because it is one of the very few facilities offering artificial turf infields.

According to the City of Carencro's website, more than 3,000 ball games take place on the 32-acre park's four diamonds every year. It stays busy during the off-season as well, playing host to special events, concerts and other relatively large-scale entertainment productions.


The City of Carencro offers residents numerous amenities, such as the Carencro Community Center, a 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility capable of customizable transformations, depending on the event. Its Great Room holds a commercial-grade, full-service kitchen, perfect for large business conferences, wedding receptions and various other group events.

Mardi Gras and Christmas are major community events 'round these parts. "A Carencro Country Christmas" is a free, family-oriented event held at the Carencro Community Center. It occurs on the first Saturday in December and features arts and crafts booths, holiday-themed food, musical entertainment and a Children's Parade.

A carnival of merriment is what you'll find during Mardi Gras in Carencro. This festive celebration includes a parade, extravagant costumes, and a newly appointed King and Queen to rule over the annual ball.

The farthest eastern edge of Carencro real estate is near the eastern banks of the Atchafalaya River, which forms the western edge of the massive 44,000-acre Sherburne Complex Wildlife Management Area. There are also serene and beautiful bayous, swamps and forests in the region, beckoning to the nature lover and adventure seeker in you.

The Carencro area's dominant geographical feature is the Atchafalaya Basin Swamp, a vast expanse of wetlands inhabited by an eclectic variety of wildlife.

Schools, Health, Transportation

The Lafayette Parish School System operates four public schools in Carencro: Carencro Heights Elementary; Live Oak Elementary; Carencro Middle School; and Carencro High School.

Interstate highways 49 and 10 come together a couple of miles south of Carencro, which is also served by several U.S. and state highways. And when you require the services of the airline industry, you have the Lafayette Regional Airport about 9 miles to the southeast, the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport about 50 miles to the east, and the New Orleans International Airport 120 miles east of town.
