New Iberia

The city of New Iberia is known as the “Queen City of the Teche.”  It combines trade and commerce with a vibrant culture that prompts their claim, “A place where the climate is mild, the people are warm and the food is spicy and hot!”  New Iberia is a unique blend of French, Spanish, Native American, and African American cultures all coming together right here in the heart of Cajun country.

New Iberia is the parish seat for Iberia Parish, and dates back to 1779 when a group of Malagueños colonists travelled along with Colonel Francisco Bouligny up Bayou Teche and established a settlement around Spanish Lake.

New Iberia is the home of the Shadows-on-the-Teche historic residence, owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and Avery Island, birthplace of Tabasco sauce and location of the oldest salt mine in North America.  The Annual Bunk Johnson/New Iberia Jazz, Arts & Heritage Festival, also known as the BunkFest, takes place in New Iberia.

Annually New Iberia hosts the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival in September, celebrating the beginning of the sugar cane harvest.  New Iberia is also the host of the World Championship Gumbo Cook-Off on the first full weekend in October, the Cajun Hot Sauce Festival, and the Great Gator Race.
